I was asked by Smelly to start a log up in here, and it is just sad to see a fat man beg that much so here i am.

For those who don't know me I am a strength and conditioning coach, personal trainer and ART therapist in the bay area. I work with a cliental ranging from 70+ year old jewish grandmas to a junior college girls basketball team and have recently started to work with a cancer patient.

As a member of diablo barbell my lifts in my first meet went from 505 squat, 402 bench and 505 dead to an 881 squat, 585(or whatev the kilo is) and a 711 dead. I have elite totals in the 308 and 275 classes.

More importantly I am a proud father of 3 girls(Rena 11, 14 months olds twins Kaycie and Sophia) and spend as much time at home with them as possible. I am training in my garage with my wife ,a former powerlifter who squated 500 and just mite be eyeing up a return to the platform, and at the facilities I work at.

I have had to take some time off lifting over the past few months, so this is a bit of a come back log, a do it yourself in a garage log and how to rasie 3 kids while cooking dinner and deadlifting log. Right now I am training to get myself back into powerlifting shape, yes that actually exists. The lack of a meet or contest will give me some time to play around with a lot of training ideas, protocols and bad ideas i have been studying and tossing around in my head.

I will be posting my workouts on a weekly basis and will throw in some of my wife's, daughter's amd client's workouts as well. I am always up for helping anyone out with anything, so if you think i can help please ask.

thanks,
Jesse.

I have been doing what I could over the 3-4 weeks prior to this, nothing really worth posting. Again the goal for a while is to improve conditioning and accumulate as much volume as possible.

9/30
dynamic warm up.

conv. deadlift vs mini band.
135x10x2
225x5x2
-add band
225x5
275x5
315x5x3
-the way i add tension since my garage is still incomplete is 'phil davi' style. you throw the band over the bar, stand on it and then pull.

kettelbell swings.
two handed x 100.

bathed the girls.
Ericka came home and did the same thing i did with 135+bandx5x3. she hasn't deadlifted much since the twins were born, it is normally a weak lift for her but her form and speed looked great. i also did pulldown abs with her.

10/1
45 hyper
hip mobility
foam roller

10/2
benchpress: pinkie on rings.
barxa lotx2
135x15x2
185x10
225x5
275x5x3
135x23

lat pull down.
tri ext.

10/4
dynamic warm up.

free squat.
barxsome
135x100x2
-since i had to clean and press the weight to get it on my shoulders and i dont have clips for the bar 135 is all i was cool with doing...plus i really do need to build up the volume.

10/5
took the girls out for a walk in the double wide stroller wearing the 50lb vest while Ericka rollerbladed. Took about a half an hour. When we got back i did 10 sets of about 15reps on the jumprope.

10/6
45 degree hyper
stretch

10/7
dynamic warm up.

conv. deadlift vs mini band.
135xsomex2
225x10ish
-add band
225x some more
315x5
345x3x3

kettlebell swings.
50 two hands, 25 each hand, 50 two handsx2

pulldown abs.
Rena did a bunch of kbell swings and pulldown abs just so she could hang off this back traction contraption we have set up and have the dog lick her face.

10/8
foam roll
stretch

10/9
mini band shoulder dislocations, overhead pull aparts, pullapartsx25eachx2
mini tri push downs.
k-bell shoulder press.

pushups.
-did 3 sets of restpause style. this is where one set is you do as many as possible, take ten deep breaths, repeat and repeat again. dont remember the numbers but i do remember being fried afterwards.

10/10
Started working with my new cancer client today, I will call him 'M'.

It was an eye opening experience for me. So many times I deal with people looking to improve performance, look better, lose weight, gain weight, get stronger etc... When i asked 'M' what he thought i could do to help him out the most he responce was to make his remaining days on earth the best they can be. He wants to be strong enough to walk with his wife, have enough endurance to play with his grand kids and be well enough to have an 80th birthday party in January. No pressure right?

His training is done at his house. When training we will be making use of the san francisco hills, his own bodyweight, his stairs, his abliility to resist my bodyweight, light bands and dumbbells. We will also be addressing his frozen right shoulder and the nerve issues it has left him with. This will, in all likelyhood, be the most diffucult client I have ever had to deal with. Not so much becauce of his physical limitations but because of the mental ones. He is coming to grips with his own mortality. I have to constantly remind him to focus on what he is doing and do my best to get a smile and a laugh or two out of him. When these do occur his phyiscal abilities improve immediatly. Just like yogi says- "90% of the game is half mental" or something like that.

10/12
dynamic warm up.

step ups to 10inch box.
bwx20x2
-add 50lb vest
x20x2
-add ssb on shoulders
x20
-found out that there was no way to clean and press the ssb so i had to hold it zercher style.
-vest + 165
x10x2

kbell swings x 100
kbell swing, clean, snatch progression.
x10 each move, each hand non-stopx2

pulldown abs.

I assume this is the the ugly Ladewski?

Glad to hear everything with the knee is getting better. In my opinion the 'swelling' you speak of is probably adipose tissue, try mixing in a salad.

How is the old lady, Hannah Rose and the new one in the oven? Tell them all I say 'what it do'

Well last year we made it thru January on one tank of propane. Hopefully it will be the same. We are now up to 5 people on week days and ten on Sundays. Last year it was two or three people most of the time. I need to get a comp bench and put it in the basement to stay warm. We do not have a service entrance so it can get breezy when someone comes in.

I injured my back, according to the chiropractor i have a phase 1 compression in my low back, the spinal nerve root(i guess thats what they are called) located at the very bottom is somewhat compressed. what it do red?!?!?

Well, thanks for the question. This will have to turn into a bit of an exchange due to some further information i need to help you. so, as long as you are game...

first thing you need to know is that a compression injury to the spine, especialy the lumbar spine, are normally stable and can be managed in about 6-8 weeks. the time table can be lessened if caught early enough and the proper rehab-ish exercises are compeated.

now is this is new injury(acute) or an old one(chronic)? how did it came about, like a car accident or jut sitting on your fat ass 10 hours a day? you mentioned a nerve root being compressed as well, how is that presenting itself? numbing, tinglyness, shooting pain etc? and what do you have access to for recovery(ice, heat, stim etc) and gym equipment? and finaly what did your chiro do and suggest for you?

lets start there...

After a high volume session of deadlifts my back was feeling real fatigued, so i took a week off lower body, pain got worse and is at its worse pain while sitting down. Its been 3.5 weeks since the pains started, my chiro suggested 10-15 sessions of just decompression work, but i lack the funds for that. The nerve compression isnt very present due to it being very minor, i just want to take care of this before it gets worse. I have ice/heat for recovery, as gym equipment im going to switch to a gym with a reverse hyper and the other normal commercial gym equipment. My chiro did 3 sessions, all just quick adjustments plus the x ray.

Any more info you need or that i left out let me know

Ok, still need to know the 'kind' pain you are talking about and how much it has subsided to really finish things up. Looking at thing like your time line, what the chiro did and suggested there are some pretty easy things you can do to take care of yourself. So probably another exchange or two and we are good but untill then i would examine your deadlifting form and training.
